In the Punjab games Prasmita created new record in snatch and total lifts and Sunaina set the clean and jerk record. This year Sunaina upstaged the Orissa girl by clinching all the records on her way to gold. AP's K. Krishna Kumari did better than Premeswari Devi of Karnataka in the clean and jerk to clinch the bronze medal. First Prasmita equalled the meet record of 87.5 kg in snatch in her second attempt and Sunaina followed suit. Both were set for a record-breaking performance in their final attempts, taken at 90 kg. But here the Punjab girl was successful. Krishnaveni could not complete her lift in her attempt to equal the record in her final lift. She finished with a best of 82.5 achieved in her second attempt. The top two girls renewed their fight for records in the second part of the competition. Sunaina equalled her record of 110 kg in her very first attempt while Prasmita started with 107.5 kg. The Orissa girl successfully lifted 112.5 kg for the record and Sunaina too got into the record books. Both attempted 117.5 kg in their final attempts, but did not succeed. Sunaina finished with a total lift of 202.5 kg and Prasmita was 2.5 kg behind. Krishnaveni was successful at lifting 105 kg in her first attempt in jerk, but failed in her attempt to lift 115 kg to overtake the existing record. She had a total of 187.5 kg.
Services claimed the men's 69 kg gold. Chitra Durga Prasad won the event with a total lift of 297.5 kg. His teammate Vadivelu Govindan won silver (292.5 kg) and Punjab's Gurucharan Singh won bronze (285 kg) The results: Women: 1. Sunaina (Punjab snatch 90, clean and jerk 112.5 and total 202.5 kg all NMRs), 2. Prasmita Mangaraj (Orissa, 87.5, 112.5 and 200 kg), 3. K. Krishnakumari (AP). (Old records 87.5 by Prasmita, 110 by Sunaina and 197.5 by Prasmia, all during 2001 NG, Patiala). Men: 1. S. Ramachandran (Maharashtra, 117.5, 140 and 257.5 kg), 2. D. Wilson (SSCB), 3. N. Tirumurugan (SSCB). Men: 69 kg: 1. Chitra Durga Prasad (SSCB, 135, 162.5 and 297.5 kg), 2. Vadivelu Govindan (SSCB), 3. Gurucharan Singh (Punjab).
