Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat, turning out for Andhra Pradesh, began with scores of 100,100,100 and 99 in her first details. Deepali at the end of her first detail had one score of 100 and the rest were 99s thus trailing by two points. While most people applauded Anjali for her accurate shooting thinking the contest was as good as over, Deepali making a comeback into the 10-metre air rifle event was steeling herself to make a strong bid for the title. Going into the title deciding rounds, Anjali began to make some cardinal errors with her stance. Despite knowing where she was faltering, Anjali was wary of making any changes in her stance resulting in some scores of just under tens. Deepali was meanwhile gaining ground with four shots of ten plus scores. However, Anjali's lead in the first round held her in good stead as she squeaked home to win with a score of 500.5 as against Deepali's 500.4. Both shooters eclipsed the old National Games record standing in Anjali's name. Manavjit Singh Sandhu too came up with a command performance at the trap event. Following up with excellent scores in the first round, Manavjit, who had assured himself of a gold, began to slacken off a bit in the final round. His eventual score of 145.0 bettered Anwar Sultan's record of 139 set at Punjab. Anwar finished second and Zorawar Singh finished third. Jaspal Rana took the title in the 25-metre standard pistol event but was well below his personal best of 578 achieved at Imphal. Jaspal who had trouble with civil aviation authorities when he first made travel plans to Hyderabad and almost decided to skip the nationals was persuaded to participate came up with a score of 570.0 to get a gold for Uttar Anchal. The results: Trap: 1. Manavjit Singh Sandhu, (Pun, 145.0); 2. Anwar Sultan (Del, 138.0); 3. Zorawar Singh (Pun, 137.0). Teams: Punjab (Manavjit Singh, Birender Sodhi, Zorawar Singh) 345; 2.
