Party leaders, led by the presidium chairman, L. Ganesan, met the DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, who affixed the first signature. The senior DMK leader, Durai Murugan, also signed the appeal. The MDMK said it would approach leaders of all like-minded parties and seek their signatures. Mr. Karunanidhi later told the media that he was fulfilling his "democratic duty" by affixing his signature. He had gone to the Vellore prison to meet Mr. Vaiko, whom he considered his "younger brother.'' Asked whether there were chances of coordination between the two parties in future, Mr. Karunanidhi said it would be known in due course.
