The NCW chairperson, Purnima Advani, along with three other members, recorded the statements of the mother, brother and husband of Kanchan Mishra, all of whom said that Sultan Mian, allegedly wanted in connection with over a dozen crimes and said to be close to a politician, had forcibly taken her away and solemnised the marriage as per Islamic rites in the first week of November. Ms. Mishra's mother said that her daughter had said a week prior to her disappearance that she was under threat to marry Sultan Mian or would be liquidated. The City Superintendent of Police, Patna, O.N. Bhasker, said no case had been registered against Sultan Mian's marriage with Ms. Mishra nor with respect to her abduction. He claimed that the police had been informed that the marriage was by consent. The police have promised to make all files available to the Commission and cooperate with it in making a conclusive finding. Ms. Advani said the Commission was looking into the matter on the basis of reports and information provided by NGOs. She resolved not to leave Patna without seeing Ms. Mishra and recording her statement. People were not forthcoming to depose before the Commission in the wake of the terror unleashed by the don. At the same time, the Commission is keeping a secret the witnesses it had been able to line up. The allegation doing the rounds is that several politicians had attended the marriage ceremony. The BJP leaders have pointed an accusing finger at an RJD leader, though the latter had on numerous occasions denied any links with Sultan Mian.
