"Threat to Council Hall came by e-mail"

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI DEC. 16 . The anonymous threat that the Al-Qaeda militant outfit planned to blow up the Legislative Council Hall in Nagpur was sent by e-mail to the United States Consulate authorities here. They, in turn, passed on the message to the Maharashtra Government a couple of days ago following which the Director-General of Police, Subhas Malhotra, took charge of protecting the premises.

The winter session of the two houses of the legislature got underway on December 11 and even before this tip-off, security had been beefed up by putting up more barriers and making stringent checks.

Now, the security was more stringent and every vehicle, including that of MLAs, MLCs and Ministers, was being checked more thoroughly, apparently with the sanction of the presiding officers. Some 5,000 additional security personnel had been sent to Nagpur. The new threat has added to the stress of the security personnel.
