V. Sumantran, Executive Director, Passenger Car Business Unit and Engineering Research Centre, Tata Engineering, with the new Tata Indigo car in Pune. The car will be launched on December 18 in Mumbai.
The Indigo petrol comes with an 85 bhp engine, while the diesel version is the only vehicle in its class with a turbo charged engine. An entirely new powertrain, a three link independent suspension and large 14" wheels are unique features of the Indigo. V. Sumantran, executive director, passenger car business unit and Engineering Research Centre, while addressing the media here today, said the Indigo had undergone seven months of extensive and rigorous tests at the internationally reputed test facilities of MIRA, U.K. He further said the company had a spate of product launches lined up and the Indigo was one among them in its category. The Estate version of the Tata Indigo is to be launched `sometime' during calendar 2003. Dr. Sumantran said over a period, the company had committed an amount of around Rs. 350 crores towards the development of the Indigo including powertrains. Ravi Dube, vice president, marketing, passenger car business unit said Telco was looking to sell 1,000-1,200 Indigos a month on a sustained basis. The company had sold 63,117 units (including Sumo, Safari and Indica) in the first eight months of the current fiscal (April-November 2002) and was in line to meet its sales target of one lakh vehicles in the domestic market for the full year.
