NEG Micon commissions 9 MW wind farm

By S. Varadharajan

CHENNAI DEC. 16. NEG Micon India Private Ltd, a 100 per cent subsidiary of NEG Micon of Denmark, a global leader in wind turbine technology, has successfully installed and commissioned a 9 MW wind farm at Panagudi village in Thirunelveli district. Consisting of 12 wind turbines of 750 kW each, these were developed for Sri Jayajothi and Company, a textile mill in Rajapalayam.

After the inaugural function yesterday, Ramesh Kymal, managing director, NEG Micon India, told The Hindu that "With the high wind regimes that are predominant at Panagudi village, we have ensured effective use of the area providing maximum return on investment." NEG Micon had offered support and advice at every stage of the project ensuring that this project was financially feasible, he said. It would also work with the company as a service and maintenance partner ensuring optimum performance. NEG Micon had so far installed 40 wind turbines of 750 kW each out of which 12 were functioning in Panagudi village. Orders were also on hand for 25 MW which were in various stages of implementation, Mr. Kymal said.

Officials of Jayajothi and Company said the cost of the 9 MW project was Rs. 36 crores. They justified the investment as the wind farm would meet more than 80 per cent of their power requirement. There were also plans to install wind mills for another 16 MW before March next, the officials said.

NEG Micon had also established a prototype of 950 kW at Panagudi village which would be tested for one wind season to assess its performance. It was also planning to establish manufacturing bases for allied products and technologies to wind turbine generators. The objective was to provide complete solutions, Mr. Kymal said.
