Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The team, led by B.K. Thyagi, inspected the area yesterday and today and collected Dengue vector specimens from Melaranoor, Kumarapuram and Karakulam in the city for virus isolation study, according to reports. A nine-year-old girl from Melaranoor had died of Dengue infection on December 10. The transmission of the virus from mosquito to human beings takes place only when the vector density reaches a certain level, it was pointed out. The vector should be deprived of potential breeding spots such as water collected in used tyres, coconut shells, flower pots, etc, in the compounds of houses. The experts' team also visited the State Entomology Laboratory attached to the Directorate of Health Services before returning to Madurai today. The virus activation study would be conducted at the CRME laboratory in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. On the basis of the virus activation study, which is part of a three-year project of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), the Health authorities here would be given guidelines for future control activities that are to be followed.
