Margins of victory

AHMEDABAD DEC. 15. Amit Shah, BJP MLA from Sarkhej in Ahmedabad district, earned the distinction of winning by the highest margin of 1,58,036 votes as he retained the seat in the Gujarat Assembly polls.He defeated Himanshu Patel of the Congress, who contested his maiden Assembly poll.

Mr. Shah, who is also the Gujarat BJP vice-president, polled 2,88,327 votes as against Mr. Patel, who secured 1,30,291 votes.

The narrowest margin of victory was 73 votes, by which Congress's Shankar Varli defeated his BJP rival, Raman Patkar, in the Umbergaon (ST) constituency in South Gujarat.

Mr. Varli polled 47,350 votes as against 47,277 by Mr. Patkar. BJP lost the seat. — PTI
