Mr. Shah, who is also the Gujarat BJP vice-president, polled 2,88,327 votes as against Mr. Patel, who secured 1,30,291 votes. The narrowest margin of victory was 73 votes, by which Congress's Shankar Varli defeated his BJP rival, Raman Patkar, in the Umbergaon (ST) constituency in South Gujarat. Mr. Varli polled 47,350 votes as against 47,277 by Mr. Patkar. BJP lost the seat. PTI
