Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Saptarshi Bhattacharya
Solution to this half-a-decade-long problem seems to be distant as repeated pleas to authorities concerned fell on deaf ears, say local residents and traders. When the Metrowater could not clear the blocks, it diverted the sewage lines into the storm water drains, Chennai Corporation officials said. Whether on Kannan Street in Division 13 or on V.P. Koil Street and East Cemetery Road in Division 9, the extent of the problem has been acute. During the recent floods, the stagnating rainwater mixed with the sewage and made life difficult for the local residents. Corroborating the Corporation's charge was the slush removed from a storm water drain on Veerakutty Street in Division 8 where desilting work is in progress. The silt removed was jet black and emitted a foul smell. The drain was brimming with sewage water. This has brought the Chennai Corporation and Metrowater face to face with each other. While not denying this, the Metrowater Managing Director, K. Deenadayalan, said the connections were routed to the storm water drains as a temporary measure because the New Tondiarpet F Pumping Station inaugurated in July, was closed down owing to a leakage during the trial run. Metrowater was examining all the joints in the pipeline carrying sewage in and out of the pumping station. The work is expected to be over in a fortnight, he said. The F Station is the terminal pumping station for other stations in the region and is a feeding centre for the Kodungaiyur treatment plant.
