The records were created by Chetna Solanki of Gujarat in the women's pole vault and by Amarjeet Singh of Punjab in the men's triple jump. The Gujarat girl's fine technique and faultless run up enabled her to go higher and higher till she broke the old record of 3.25 mts set by Karamjeet Kaur who had set the National and also National Games record in the Punjab National Games in 2001. Karamjeet herself also broke her old record by clearing 3.30 to take the silver while V.S. Surekha of Tamil Nadu equalled the old mark to take the bronze. In the men's triple, Amarjeet Singh held the old mark of 16.04 mts. The remarkable thing about his performance today was that he bettered his old record with five of his attempts today, the best of which was 16.38 ! Pritpal Singh of Punjab who had won the gold in the earlier edition of the Games had to settle for silver. Gulab Chand gave a superb display of endurance when he won the 1500 mts as well as the 10,000 mts later in the evening. In the 1500 mts Dharamveer of Haryana led the pack in the initial stages but Gulab Chand put on a strong sprint in the home straight to hit the tape first. It was the first gold on the track for AP. Gulab Chand said later that he had not done any hard preparation for this meet and instead had taken a long rest after the Busan Asian Games to recuperate. Even today he was not totally fit and had recurring camps in his leg and was not even sure whether he should take part in the 10,000 mts. But the fact that he did decide to run the gruelling race was a good thing for AP since he managed to wrest the gold there also. The 25-lap race saw an interesting duel over the last five laps. Aman Saini of Himachal was leading, but at a slow pace while Gulab Chand and I.A.Shivanand held back waiting to strike along with G.Lakade of Services. Into the last lap Lakade made the first burst but was soon overtaken by Saini who led till the home staight. It was only with about 70 metres to go, that Gulab Chand put on a tremendous sprint to overtake Saini and just before the finish Shivanand also managed to edge out Saini. In the women's long jump a lot of expectations rested on Asian Games gold medallist Anju B. George. She won the gold but could not set any records. The results: Men: 1500m: 1. Gulab Chand (AP) 3m 51.32s; 2. Dharamveer (Har) 3m 51.81s; 3. Sanjeev T.M. (Kerala) 3m 52.87s. Javelin throw: 1. Jagdish Bishnoi (Pun) 72.96m; 2. Ramandeep Singh (Chd) 72.04s; 3.
