Hockey: Comfortable win for Haryana

By V. V. Subrahmanyam

HYDERABAD DEC. 15. Defending champion Haryana recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Jharkhand in women's league match of the 32nd National Games hockey competition at the Begumpet Police Stadium here today.

It was a dismal show from Jharkand, which trounced Punjab 4-0 in its first match. Clearly, the team lacked the cohesion and thrust upfront. The saving grace being some good runs down the centre by captain Masira and Amrita. Consequently, Haryana had a much easier outing than was expected. It shot into lead in the 25th minute when a one-to-one effort from Balwinder and Mamata Kharub did the trick. International Mamata essayed a delectable minus to the advancing Balwinder inside the striking circle for the goal.

At half-time Haryana led by the solitary goal but ensured that the youthful forwardline of the rivals didn't have any chance to come back into the contest. Rajwinder Kaur, Sandeep Kaur and Ramneek effectively marshalled the Haryana defence the few times Masira and Amrita made their forays into its citadel. In the 40th minute, Meenakshi converted a penalty-corner to net the second goal. In all, Haryana earned nine penalty-corners while Jharkand just one.

In the morning, host Andhra Pradesh was effectively knocked out of contention after its 0-2 defeat at the hands of Punjab. Manjinder and Surjit Kaur scored the two goals in the fifth and 46th minutes.

Orissa fought back remarkably well to hold Delhi for a two-all draw. Delhi was leading 2-1 in the 15th minute and looked likely to wrap up the issue. It was Orissa, which took the lead in the fourth minute when Savita converted a penalty-corner. Delhi equalised through Pratima who scored of a penalty stroke in the 21st minute.

In the second session, Delhi surged ahead with Aniela showing her striking prowess converting a penalty-corner. For Orissa, Babita scored in the 57th minute and the match ended in a draw.

In the last match of the day, last edition's runner-up Chandigarh surprised Maharashtra with a 1-0 win after the two teams failed to break the deadlock till the 67th minute. Chandigarh was awarded a penalty stroke when Prakash Choudhary was tripped inside the penalty area. Captain Ahsrita Toppo converted .
