Karunanidhi doubtful of Mayoral polls in Feb.

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Dec. 15. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, has raised doubts over whether the Mayoral polls for Chennai scheduled for February would be held at all.

According to Mr. Karunanidhi, as the ousted Chennai Mayor and his son, M. K. Stalin, had moved the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court's verdict striking down his reelection for a second term, the fresh polls may not be conducted.

Even while quashing a provision of the AIADMK Government new one-man-one-post legislation which barred Mr.Stalin, who is also an MLA, from being a Mayor, the Madras High Court had declared that he could not continue as Mayor on the ground that he could not hold the post for two successive terms.

Reintroduce scrapp ed welfare schemes

The DMK women's wing today urged the AIADMK Government to reintroduce welfare schemes initiated by the DMK Government.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of the wing here, they said many schemes including financial assistance to small-scale women entrepreneurs and marriage of girls belonging to the poor and weaker sections were scrapped. These should be revived. They also demanded installation of the Kannagi statue at the same spot. The meeting also resolved to launch a ``rationalistic campaign'' to create an awareness among people against superstitious beliefs and practices.

Earlier, speaking at the inaugural session, the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, said though the party had established the women's wing long ago, its development had not happened as was expected. The present conference was to rejuvenate the wing. He said a State-level conference would be held soon. This would be an ``historic occasion in the annals of Tamil Nadu,'' he said. The details of the conference would be worked out by the party leadership after discussions.
