Malkani deplores decline in reading habit among youth

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Dec. 15. The Lieutenant Governor, K. R. Malkani, has expressed disappointment over the decline in reading habit among youth.

Declaring open a Rs. 16-lakh library complex of the Tamizh Sangam here today, he said the Sangam would do well if it held programmes in collaboration with other libraries at Chennai and Madurai and also exchanged scholars to enrich and develop Tamil language. He welcomed the setting up a separate complex for activities of the Sangam here.

The library should have most important and vital books.

The writers of books should also be invited for a direct interface at the Sangam, Mr. Malkani suggested.

The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, presiding, said the Administration would always promote activities for the development of Tamil. Compulsory learning of Tamil had been ensured under the curriculum. Pondicherry earned an eternal place in the world of Tamil as great poets spread the message of Tamil from the soil of Pondicherry.

The Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, the MLA, A. M. Krishnamoorthy, the Development Commissioner of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration, S. Hemachandran, the president of the Tamizh Sangam, Mannar Mannan, functionaries of the Sangam, Naa Kee, G. Bharathi and former chief president of the Sangam and former Judicial Magistrate, Sedhu Murugaboopathy, were among those who spoke.

The Sangam constructed the library with the funds provided by C. P. Tirunavukarasu, an MP from Pondicherry, and also with the grants from the Department of Art and Culture and the DRDA.

Messages of Mr. Tirunavukarasu from Delhi (where he is undergoing treatment for eye ailment) and the Education Minister, K. Lakhsminarayanan (who was away in Delhi), were read out.

The Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, also sent his greetings to the organisers.
