East Bengal beats Salgaocar

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA DEC. 15. It was a game National Football League leader East Bengal wanted to win to keep the psychological advantage before embarking upon a series of away matches.

And playing Salgaocar, the Goan league champion, at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday, East Bengal not only dominated the proceeding but also came out a 2-1 winner.

Thus the victory gave East Bengal 16 points from six games while Salgaocar had seven points from six games.

A combination of well knit passes and strong positional play marked East Bengal's early attack on the Salgaocar defence.

Brazilian Gilmar Goncalves was outstanding in the attacking line with his imaginative runs and incisive passes and to add to his game he capped a fine goal to give East Bengal the lead in the 21st minute.

When Alvito D'Cunha was tripped just outside the box, referee waved on the game to continue applying the advantage rule.

As the Salgaocar defence fumbled with the clearance, there appeared Gilmar to swing home a shot that left the rival custodian Juje Siddi completely beaten.

The success did spur East Bengal to apply pressure and the Salgaocar's equaliser came against the run of the game.

Bela Rajak side stepped M. Suresh in the East Bengal defence and passed the ball to Dudu whose first timer found the target in the 68th minute.

East Bengal continued to control the game but somewhere it lost the ideas to get into the goal scoring position.

As the crowd thought it was, after all, going to be another draw came the match-clincher through Mike Okoro in the dying minutes.

S. Malsawmtulunga set Okoro on the right and the striker quickly spotted a chance and drilled in a low right volley to make sure East Bengal won the game.
