Prove your mettle, Karnataka police told

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE DEC. 15. The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, said the image of the Karnataka police had taken a beating as they had been accused of failure to nab the forest brigand, Veerappan.

He gave a call to the State police force to "convert the challenge of catching Veerappan into an opportunity, nab him, and show that we are on the top''.

Mr. Krishna made these remarks at the valedictory function of the 46th All-India Police Duty meet here.

He said the Government and the police were determined to nab Veerappan before long and win everyone's admiration.

The Chief Minister said the Karnataka police, which had passed through a turbulent time in the past four months, had exhibited "tremendous courage'' in adverse situations, be it in handling the Cauvery crisis or the Veerappan menace.

He said policing was a thankless job. He told a huge congregation of policemen from all over the country:

"Whenever you perform well, the credit is taken away by the political leadership. Whenever there is a lapse, you are held responsible.''

He said that he was delighted at the Karnataka contingent emerging the all-round champions in the various competitions held during the meet.

Karnataka, which bagged 14 medals, was followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, which won 11 and eight medals, respectively.

Mr. Krishna gave away trophies to the winners and runners-up.

Competitions were held in the fields of scientific aids to investigation, computer awareness, police dogs, police photography, police videography, and anti-sabotage check.

The Home Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who presided over the function, explained the steps taken by the Congress Government in the past three years for improving the living and working conditions of policemen and for the modernisation of the police force.

"Our aim is to create a corruption-free and efficient police force,'' he said.

Mr. Kharge announced cash awards of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000, respectively, for policemen from the State who won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the meet.

The Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), K.P. Singh, and the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police,<243>T. Madiyal, spoke.
