Earlier, Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Koneru Humpy, too, attained their day's objective in different styles while providing similar joys to the Indian camp. On a day when the top two seeds met in both sections, boys' top seed Bu Xiangzhi was held by Levon Aronian in a 46-move contest in Queen's Gambit. Despite the draw, Aronian led with Russians Artyom Timofeev, Dmitry Jakovenko, former leader England's Luke McShane and our own Hari. The fifth seeded Timofeev made it at the expense of Ni Hua, the 10th seeded Chinese who shared the lead with Aronian until this afternoon. Before Humpy won, leader Zhao Xue reinforced her title-chances by destroying third seeded Russian Natalia Pogonina on the top board. The seventh seeded Zhao, runner-up to Humpy in the last edition, now has seven points _ one more than the second-placed Indian. From India's point of view, it was a very fruitful day at the top three Indian contenders gained maximum against their lesser-rated rivals. These victories are timely since Hari, Ganguly and Humpy had not done as well as expected in the competition. Hari and Ganguly needed to strike with white pieces and they did in contrasting ways. The seventh seeded Hari produced an end-game beauty in Catalan against Iceland's International Master Stefan Kjartansson in a match lasting just under five hours.
