Cold wave yet to arrive

Chandigarh Dec 15 . The northwest plains are yet to experience this season's cold wave, as the night temperatures continued to rise one to five degrees above normal in Punjab and Haryana.

Confirming that at present there was no sign of a cold wave in the region, the Meteorology office here maintained that it was likely that the next two days would be sunny in the northwest plains.

The minimum temperatures remained two to five degrees above normal in Punjab, Haryana and even in some hill stations of Himachal Pradesh today.

``The midnight temperatures need to be at least six degrees below normal to declare cold wave in a region,'' a spokesman of the weather office here explained.

The city and its surrounding areas of Punjab and Haryana recorded the minimum of 10.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal.

Ambala in Haryana also recorded 10.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while it was five degrees above normal in at midnight in Hisar (11 degrees Celsius).

The national capital New Delhi also experienced the midnight temperature at five degrees above normal, as the Safdarjung airport recorded 11.6 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, Amritsar remained the coldest with 4.6 degrees Celsius with, however, no depression in the normalcy.

Patiala recorded 9.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while it was four degrees above normal at Ludhiana (10.1 degrees Celsius).

Even the capital town of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh recorded five degrees above normal, a low at 9.0 degrees Celsius, while Bhuntar recorded 4.0 degrees Celsius and Sundernagar 4.6 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar recorded a bone-chilling maximum at 8.6 degrees Celsius yesterday while Jammu had a high of 20.9 degrees Celsius, the weather office here said.

The weathermen have forecast mainly sunny weather for most of Punjab and Haryana while showers are likely at some places in Himachal Pradesh over the next two days. -- UNI
