Tikait was arrested yesterday, along with his supporters at Milak in Rampur district, while on way to Basti, where three fameres were killed in police firing. Tikait was lodged in a temporary jail in Rampur. BKU vice president Bhopal Singh said government should immediately release Tikait failing which they would be forced to stage a state-wide agitation. Meanwhile, BKU workers blocked Delhi-Dehradun national highway at Ghasipur, around 15 kms from here. Principal Secretary (Home) Pradip Kumar said that the BKU leader was held in the Milkhi area while proceeding for Munderwan, as a preventive measure in apprehension of breach of peace. Three people had died in the December 11 clash between BKU activists and police at Munderwa town in Basti district. The home department, however, claimed that the three persons were not killed in police action. The BKU had been organising sit-ins and demonstrations before the Munderwan sugar mill in Basti since December 2 demanding an increase in the minimum support price of sugarcane to Rs 130 per quintal and immediate payment of old dues by the sugar mills. Meanwhile, Pradip Kumar said the situation in Munderwan was fast returning to normal even as prohibitary orders were in place in the area to avoid any untoward incident. -- Agencies
