Chairing a meeting held here today to review the progress of development works in the district, the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, said the Government had agreed in principle to develop these two shrines under the KDA, and a formal order in this regard would be issued shortly.
Referring to the demand by the Basavanabagewadi MLA that a separate body on the lines of KDA be formed to develop Basavanna's birthplace, Mr. Krishna said it would lead to additional administrative expenses. Hence, it had been decided to develop Basavanna's birthplace under the KDA, which was developing Koodalasangam. Chikkasangam in Bagalkot District, which was submerged in the Alamatti backwaters, would also be developed under the KDA, he added.
The alleged housing scheme scam in the district figured in the meeting even as the elected representatives from the district, especially the district in-charge minister, B.S.Patil Sasanur, tried to downplay the misuse of housing grants saying that anomalies were omnipresent.
Stating that the method of inquiry by the zilla panchayat's investigative teams was not proper, Mr. Sasanur said they should have checked whether the progress of house construction work matched the funds that was released for the purpose. However, the inquiry was conducted based on the beneficiaries' list, which would often be changed at the behest of the Ashraya committees.
However, the Urban Development Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, rejected the argument of Mr. Sasanur and said the beneficiaries' list was important to determine how many of them had been given houses.
Later, Mr. Krishna told presspersons said an inquiry had been ordered into the reported misappropriation of funds in the housing scheme. In the first phase, the inquiry would be conducted in Indi taluk on an experimental basis. If the allegations were true, the inquiry would cover other taluks also.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Bijapur Zilla Panchayat had been asked to conduct the inquiry
