With case studies presented by the likes of TVS Motors and Infosys, the processes and various quality models being implemented by corporate houses have started to pay off. Even SMEs such as Madras Engineering Industries Ltd. have shown significant reduction in overhead costs and increased productivity using the TQM (total quality management) technique. With the participation of 750 delegates, this year's Quality Summit has had the biggest attendance till date. "The CII's annual quality event is no longer about individual learning. Companies such as BHEL have used this forum to implement institutionalised learning. There has been greater awareness about TQM and firms are more willing to share their (successful) experiences,'' N.Srinivasan, Deputy Director General, CII-Institute of Quality, told The Hindu. Interestingly, this year's summit saw an impressive trend of government(s) showing "Quality in Governance". The State Government's Bhoomi-Online delivery of land records in the State was one such example. Industry feedback had sought greater partnership with the Government for implementation of quality in e-governance projects. Meanwhile, the CII-IQ will train government officials at the institute on various TQM processes. After Bill Gates' statement on India's quality education being an important reason for the IT industry's growth, education had received further impetus with the CII-IQ's ``Quality in Education'' programme. While 500 schools in North Bangalore District received training in TQM during the first phase, the institute would shortly commence its next level of coaching. A body of mentors would teach 50-100 students and teachers from seven schools on implementing quality within these institutions, Mr. Srinivasan said.
