Change in telephone numbers

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Nov. 16. In line with the decision of the Department of Telecom to implement 10-digit National Significance Number (NSN), the existing telephone numbers of BSNL customers would be prefixed with digit 2.

A BSNL release from the Office of the Chief General Manager Telecom, AP Circle said that the digit `2' would be prefixed to all the telephone numbers of BSNL, AP on a single day on Sunday. Though it would be difficult to incorporate technical changes overnight in all the 3,000 exchanges, the AP Telecom Circle had taken all steps necessary to cause least inconvenience to its customers.

The DoT has allotted specific levels to each of the service providers of the Telecom in the country and BSNL has been allotted level-2 for its customers throughout the country. TTL was allotted 55 and 56 sub-levels for its operations in AP.

Of 242 Short Distance Charging Areas in AP Telecom Circle, Hyderabad has seven-digit telephone numbers, while Visakhapatnam, Bhimili, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore and Warangal SDCAs have six-digit numbers and the remaining 233 SDCAs have five-digit local numbering scheme.

For implementation of NSN, the number length of the subscribers would be increased from the existing 5-digits to 6-digits, 6-digits to 7-digits and 7-digits to 8-digits by prefixing the digit 2.

However, in view of the change in STD codes of Tirupati and Karimnagar SDCAs, the digits `22' would be prefixed to the existing telephone numbers, the release added.
