Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
The Police Commissioner had written to the Collector, Rajeswar Tiwari, requesting for the inquiry into the `causes' and `circumstances' that led to the death of the accused. A quick report would help them take action against the guilty, he said. Meanwhile, the Majlis Bachao Tahreek corporator, Amjadullah Khan, urged the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, to order an inquiry by a sitting High Court Judge into the custodial death. He demanded the dismissal of the Falaknuma Inspector, Suryanarayana, and the arrest of Maitri Committee member, Mohd. Raheem, for his alleged involvement in the incident. An ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh and employment to a family member of the deceased were other demands, made by Mr. Khan. The People's Union for Civil Liberties also demanded the suspension of Falaknuma Circle Inspector for the death of Ziaduddin Baig in custody. The PUCL, which deputed a fact-finding committee said the committee after speaking to relatives of the deceased and policemen in the area, concluded that Ziaduddin died due to police torture in the name of interrogation. It demanded an inquiry into the incident by either a sitting High Court Judge or civil liberties groups. It also demanded immediate constitution of vigilance committees comprising members of public and civil liberties organisations to keep a check on the police stations.
