The officers have been put in charge of different Corporation zones to inspect low-level and inundated areas and suggest immediate and long-term proposals, supervise immediate relief works including repair of roads, desilting of drains and channels, and identify encroachments on storm water drains and water channels and road margins and recommend remedial measures, according to an official release. This follows the official announcement on the formation of the team after the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, inspected the flood-affected areas early this week. The Project Director, DANIDA Health Care Project, M.P. Vijaykumar, has been entrusted with the operations in Tondiarpet and Pulianthope zones, while the Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies, V. Kanagaraj, has been put in charge of Ayanavaram and Kilpauk zones. The Officer on Special Duty, Survey and Settlement, Ashok Dongre, is for Nungambakkam zone, Joint Secretary (Agriculture), P.M.Basheer Ahmed, for Kodambakkam zone, the Director of Social Defence, Mohammed Nasimuddin, for Saidapet zone, and the Director of Small Savings, T.K. Ramachandran is in charge of Mylapore zone. The performance of sewage pumping stations of the Metrowater during rains will be scrutinised while the problem spots of drinking water mixing with sewage will be rectified in coordination with Metrowater and the Chennai Corporation. The desilting of waterways by the PWD will be supervised as also the outfalls of storm water drains leading to rivers and canals. The officers will also inspect the road repair works, carried out by the Highways department, and interact with the people in the affected localities and redress their grievances. Desilting of storm water drains, which is progressing slow now, will be given top priority and the authorities are also contemplating using mechanised devices. Metrowater pumping stations have been instructed to work to their full capacity while the damaged manholes will be repaired immediately. This evening, the team attended a meeting convened by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Secretary, L.N. Vijayaraghavan, which was attended by the Chennai Corporation Commissioner, M. Kalaivanan, the Metrowater Managing Director, K. Dheenadayalan, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), G.V. Sastry and the Chennai Collector, A. Abdul Salaam. Earlier, Mr. Vijayaraghavan inspected the relief operations in the Choolai, Purasawalkam, Pulianthope, Moolakothalam, Korukkupet, Kodungaiyur, MKB Nagar and Basin Bridge areas.
