The CMBT has been constructed to reduce traffic congestion caused by mofussil and long route buses on important corridors in Chennai and to solve the unmanageable situation in the mofussil and long route bus terminus at Esplanade, Basin Bridge, Broadway and on MUC Ground, a release said today. The CMBT is meant to gradually phase out the movement of these buses in Chennai's main roads. South-bound State Transport Corporation (STC) buses, State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) buses, and other State Government transport buses will temporarily travel via NH 45, Jawaharlal Nehru Statue, Inner Ring Road (IRR) and Nesapakkam Road to the terminus. The west-bound buses will take NH 4, Koyambedu Market Road and Nesapakkam Road to the new terminus, while the north-bound buses will go through NH 5, IRR, Koyambedu round about, NH 4, Koyambedu Market Road and Nesapakkam Road to the CMBT. The south-bound stage carriage buses run by private operators, omni buses and other contract carriage buses will travel via NH 45, Tambaram-Erumbuliyur new bridge, NH Bye Pass Road (200 Feet Road), NH 4, Maduravoyil, Koyambedu Market Road and Nesapakkam Road to the terminus, while the west-bound buses in this category will take NH 4, Koyambedu Market Road and Nesampakkam Road, to and from CMBT. The north-bound buses will go through NH 5, IRR, Koyambedu roundabout, NH 4, Koyambedu Market Road and Nesapakkam Road to the CMBT. Heavy goods vehicles travelling on IRR from Jawaharlal Nehru Statue to Wheels India junction (IRR-Madras Tiruvallur High Road junction) will be prohibited on this stretch from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
