By Mohandas Menon
** Wavell Hinds' catch was Rahul Dravid's 100th, as a fielder and 'keeper, in 186 matches. As a 'keeper, he has 24 catches in 28 matches and 76 as a fielder in 158 games. The other Indians to take 100-plus catches are Mohd. Azharuddin (156) and wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia (110). ** The 148-run partnership between Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan was West Indies' best against India for the third wicket, beating the 112 between Brian Lara and Carl Hooper in Chennai on 23-10-1994. The stand was also the highest at this venue for the third wicket, bettering the 78-run association between West Indies' Richie Richardson and Keith Arthurton against India on 16-11-1993. ** Chris Gayle's 140 is the highest by a West Indian for a losing side, erasing Richie Richardson's 122 versus Pakistan at Sharjah on 21-10-1991. ** Sarwan became the second Caribbean batsman after Richie Richardson (against Pakistan at Sharjah on 15-11-1985) to miss out on a LOI hundred by one run. Richardson, too, was unbeaten on 99. Sarwan was the 16th batsman in LOIs to make 99 and the sixth to remain unbeaten on that score. ** During his knock of 28, Sourav Ganguly became the highest run-getter in LOIs during this calendar year. He went past 1034 (in 27 matches) by South African Herschelle Gibbs. The Indian skipper has 1047 runs in 29 matches. ** Yuveraj Singh (30, when on 12) became the 21st Indian and 169th overall to aggregate 1000 career runs in LOIs. He was appearing in his 49th match and 40th innings. Yuveraj, who now has 1018 runs (avg. 29.09), is the only fourth Indian lefthander to reach this landmark after Sourav Ganguly (8144 runs), Vinod Kambli (2477) and Robin Singh (2338). ** India's run chase was the third highest after Australia's (330-7) win over South Africa (326-3) at Port Elizabeth on 6-4-2002 and India's (326-8) triumph over England (325-5) at Lord's 13-7-2002. However, India's run chase was the best under lights, surpassing England's 306-5 against Pakistan at Karachi on 24-10-2000. ** This was the 10th time a team successfully overhauled a 300-plus target. India has achieved it the most (five), including the previous encounter at Rajkot, while Australia and Sri Lanka have done it twice. England has achieved it once. ** The previous highest successful run chase against the West Indies was the 297-5 by South Africa (WI 293-8) at Lahore on 3-11-1997. ** The match aggreagte of 649 runs was the second best on Indian soil after the 655 amassed by New Zealand (349-9) and India (306) at Rajkot on 5-11-1999. The Ahmedabad match occupies the ninth position among matches with highest run aggregates.
