Why blame DMK for poor finances, asks Chidambaram

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Nov. 16. The former Union Minister and the Congress Jananayaga Peravai general secretary, P. Chidambaram, today criticised the AIADMK Government for its `inept' handling of finances.

Talking to newsmen here, he said there was no point blaming the previous DMK regime as the finances of the Centre as well as States had not been sound for the past few years. It was for the AIADMK Government to judiciously manoeuvre the situation, instead of blaming the previous government for all woes.

Earlier, unveiling a life-size statue of Kamaraj at a private higher secondary school here, Mr. Chidambaram regretted that the birth centenary of the late leader was not celebrated in a fitting manner. In fact the celebrations should have been organised at the all-India level. Unfortunately, the Tamil Nadu Government, which should have taken the initiative, had failed to do so. ``No doubt the State organised a function on his 100th birthday but it was just another function''. It was not a proper tribute to a national leader, who was the first in the country to introduce the schemes of free school education, noon meal and supply of free books and notebooks to poor students. Subsequent rulers only fine-tuned and extended their scope. But the author of the schemes was none other than Kamaraj and no one else could claim credit.
