Police officer killed in attack on train

Damoh Nov. 16. An assistant sub-inspector was slain and a constable injured as about a dozen gangsters attacked the Katni-Bina passenger train last night for securing the release of a notorious criminal, who was being brought back here by a police team after a hearing, police said today.

The incident took place near Rithi, 70 km from here.

Soon after the train suddenly halted, the policemen were assaulted to facilitate the escape of Manish Jaiswal, who carries a purse on his head.

The attackers threw the assistant sub-inspector, Sundar Lal Bhateria (50), off the train and also tried to subject constable, Shiv Lal, to the same treatment.

Bhateria died on the spot. Constable Suresh Singh was intoxicated and could do little to prevent the attackers from taking a still-handcuffed Jaiswal.
