Governor concerned over starvation deaths

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL NOV. 16. The Madhya Pradesh Governor, Bhai Mahavir, has expressed concern over the starvation deaths in the State and said that voluntary organisations such as the Red Cross should work for mitigating the sufferings of the people.

The Governor, who is also the president of the Madhya Pradesh branch of the Indian Red Cross Society, said this while addressing a general body meeting of the Red Cross Society here on Friday. The deaths were unfortunate and voluntary organisations should work with Government agencies in vulnerable areas. He urged the Indian Red Cross Society to take the initiative.

Society should ensure prompt help in an emergency. Those who could provide voluntary services in emergency cases should be identified. People lacking resources for their own treatment should be extended help on priority.

The Governor launched a new website — mpredcross.org — which provides information about the services offered by the Society.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, commended the achievements of the Society and emphasised the need to initiate joint efforts for bringing down infant mortality and tackling the problem of malnutrition.
