The deputy DMHO, Abbaiah, who inquired into the incident by visiting the village on Friday, told The Hinduon Saturday that the death of the infant and hospitalisation of others was caused due to septic caused by the injection because of non-sterilisation of syringes and needles by the ANM. "Despite distribution of sterilisation kit for sterilisation of needles, the ANM had kept the kit in her house and administered the injection to the infants without any sterilisation. The ANM also delayed injection despite injecting the DPT medicine in the syringe,'' he said. Dr. Abbaiah said ANMs were keeping sterilisation kits in the PHC sub-centre for sterilisation of the equipment. Though it is the duty of the health assistant to carry the vaccine along with the ANM, the health assistant of Koheda PHC was absconding without any leave, he said adding that a week ago two infants developed reaction after they were given DPT injection in Husnabad region due to non-sterilisation of needles and syringes. He said a team of paediatricians and microbiologists would be visiting Baswapur village.
