RWITC to reinstate stakesmoney

MUMBAI Nov. 16. Mr. Vivek Jain, Chairman, Media and Marketing Committee, RWITC, said on Friday that despite the financial crunch of the Club the committee has decided to reinstate the prize money to what it was last season. He said that the stakesmoney for the coming Mumbai season was lesser than last year as was reported in a section of the press recently.

"The total prize money advertised in Mumbai - Rs. 8.07 crore - is by far the highest by any race club in India for any season in gross terms. Though the per race stakes is lower than at the Bangalore Turf Club, the RWITC has more race days and gives owners more opportunity to earn stakes'' he disclosed.

"The RWITC leads all clubs in sponsorships. The prospectus lists 52 separate entities that sponsor stakes and/or trophies, at a cumulative contribution of Rs. 2 crores. This is a record for any centre. RWITC will also have a sponsored race every week from December till early April'' he added.

"In addition to our regulars, we have new sponsors in McDonalds, Heritage Estates and Triple Seven Entertainment. We have several sponsored races for the lower handicaps to ensure a more equitable distribution of the sponsored prizes. Again, the RWITC remains the only centre to do so'' he informed.

"Three of our biggest races have new sponsors. The Indian Oaks has a new sponsor in McDonalds, the Eclipse Stakes Of India will be sponsored by R.R. Oomerbhoy and the new Heritage Estates Juvenile Million, which replaces the Y.M. Chaudhry Million, is sponsored by Mr. Byram Jeejeebhoy'' he said.

"We wish to recognise the role of owners and the owners association. The owners, by contributing about Rs. 3 crores by way of sweepstakes, are in actuality our principal sponsor.

In addition they are also sponsoring two races and will also present the Owners Racing Awards on Oaks Day.'' He added.

He also said that the Club had restructured the policy of funding the "million races'' by withdrawing its own contribution but would instead guarantee the total million. This measure would enable the club to save nearly Rs. 20 lakhs.

" The prospectus conditions on minimum runners per race and rules for division of races have been liberalised and reverted to those prevalent at the last Mumbai season. This is in deference to the wishes of the owners and also in recognition of the reduced horse strength at our centre'' he said.

"For the first time in India RWITC was featured on FM - Radio Mirchi and ESPN and Star Sports in its effort to popularise racing. To further this initial exploratory effort, RWITC will shortly be signing an agreement with a major sports channel to bring the best races on TV every Sunday.

A formal announcement will be made shortly'' he disclosed.

The RWITC would soon have a modern photo-finish camera that would determine the placings within seconds of the finish. The Poonawalla Group has sponsored this modern technology.

The RWITC will continue its promotion of the sport by having several contests of skill linked to totalisator betting.

It hopes to add new and innovative prizes this season. It will also continue the "10 to follow competition'', a popular contest sponsored by Piramyd. In order to encourage children to come for racing the club will shortly be signing an agreement with Mars Restaurants to promote a carnival type of atmosphere for the family every Sunday with food, prizes and amusement. Renaissance Goa Resort will sponsor the prize for a contest based "Leading owner of the season''.
