U.S. keen to choke terrorist funds

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

New York Nov. 16. Furthering cooperation in detecting and halting the financing of terrorism will be one of the objectives the United States will be pursuing in the meeting of the Group of 20 Finance Ministers in India, the Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill, has said.

Apart from attending the G-20 meeting, Mr. O'Neill, as a part of his trip to Asia will also be visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan. "We will have a full discussion of the global economic outlook, and I will share with them my belief that the U.S. is on the road to recovery and that global prosperity requires that all the economies of the world rekindle growth'', the senior Bush administration said prior to his trip to South and Southwest Asia. "I will look forward to advancing our efforts to bring greater predictability to emerging markets and to furthering our cooperation in detecting and halting the financing of terrorism,'' Mr. O'Neill said.

Since the horrific terror attacks of September 11, 2001, the Bush administration has been vigourously pursuing financing of terrorism as one of the things in the overall war against terror. Senior officials have been saying that the crackdown on terrorist financing, both in the country and overseas, has been paying dividends. Terrorism will be a major aspect of Mr. O'Neill's trip to Pakistan where he will be sharing his appreciation for the efforts of Islamabad and the people in combating terrorism. "The United States and Pakistan have a shared interest in fighting terrorism to maintain the freedom of our peoples to live their chosen lives in peace and build prosperity for themselves and future generations'', Mr. O'Neill said.

Mr. O'Neill will also use the occasion to visit schools, small businesses and other areas of economic and high technology interests. For instance, while in India Mr. O'Neill will be travelling to Hyderabad "where world class facilities demonstrate some of the highest productivity in the world. These success stories show what is possible when citizens of the world are allowed to reach their potential''.
