He was suffering from respiratory problems for the past few days. Born to Damodaran Potti and Sreedevi Antharjanam in 1921, Damodaran Potti was first elected to the Assembly from Veliyam on a Praja Socialist Party ticket in 1954 and he became the Deputy Speaker and later in 1957 when the Pattom Thanu Pillai Ministry was unseated and Panampally Govinda Menon took over as Chief Minister. He had also served as Public Works and Tourism Minister from 1959 in the EMS Ministry. Potti became Speaker in 1967 on being elected from the Chadayamangalam Assembly constituency. He was a senior accountant in the Defence Ministry which he relinquished following the Quit India call in August 1942 and plunged into the freedom movement. He had served as president of the Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha for 20 years
