The institute today released its Master Plan, developed and prepared by HUDCO for all the three wings of the AIIMS campus - the main campus in Ansari Nagar, the residential complex in Ansari Nagar and the third site at Masjid Moth. The AIIMS Director, P.K. Dave, admitted that "over the years, AIIMS campus has witnessed haphazard growth due to lack of proper perspective plan. The expansion of various buildings and facilities has taken place ad-hoc as per the need of various departments. This has manifested in several temporary and permanent unplanned structures, scattered services, chaotic traffic and lack of parking space besides under utilisation of land resulting in paucity of space for future.'' Under these circumstances "there was a need for a strategic and comprehensive Master Plan to cope up with increasing patient care workload and other requisites''. As per the re-development plan, the institute will get an enhanced floor area ratio and an increased ground coverage of 35 per cent. The other salient features of the plan include providing 46 per cent of the total area left as open space, 18 per cent area to include main roads and secondary roads inside campus, multi-facility conference and seminar complex proposed in the east campus. New blocks of 4000 square meters of ground coverage have been left out for any additional future requirement. The institute claims to have some already sanctioned plans on which work is on, these include the trauma centre, extension of OPD block, laundry services block, emergency department, dental college, CN tower and IRC building. This apart, a new traffic and transportation plan has been suggested both inter and intra campus transport vehicle grid at the macro and micro level which involves the linking of the east and the west campus in AIIMS by a proposed vehicular subway on Sir Aurobindo Marg. The plan also proposes augmentation of public utility services to meet the substantial demand for water and electricity besides taking care of the increasing quantities of sewage, drainage and solid waste. Apart from the plan for generating power through a captive power plant of 21 MW capacity there will also be a state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling system. Also proposed are environment friendly solutions for surface run-off water and for ground water recharging.
