Shooting

In the National shooting championship at the J.N. Radhakrishna Memorial Shooting Complex here on Thursday, Ashok triggered the day's upset by clinching gold in the 25m centre-fire pistol men event while Jaspal (ONGC) settled for silver. The 49-year old Maharashtra stalwart savoured his moment with a mixture of delight and disbelief while Jaspal mulled over his inexplicable slump after winning four golds at the Commonwealth Games at Bisley. A blank at the Busan Asian Games and today's defeat mark the lowest ebb in Jaspal's career ever since he burst on the National scene in 1993. "I shot badly, losing seven points in a round proved crucial,'' Jaspal mumbled while leaving the 25m range. Jaspal notched 580, way below his National best of 589, while Ashok ran out winner at 581. The smiles were however to stay in the Pandit household as earlier, Ashok's son Ronak Pandit claimed gold with a new National record in the 25m centre-fire pistol event for juniors. Ronak fired a 571 to obliterate his own record of 558 established at Indore last year. The day however belonged to the senior Pandit who perhaps drew inspiration from his chequered past. Ashok was National champion in the 25m centre-fire pistol event from 1984 to 1991 until Jaspal Rana strode in with an invincible aura. The championship was not held in 1992 and when it returned in 1993, Jaspal's reign began and it lasted through nine years until Ashok had other ideas today. But more than Pandit hitting a new high, it turned out to be a bad day for Jaspal as he fumbled with a 43 out of 50 in one of the rounds in the duelling event. And Ashok did concede Jaspal's superiority, which however never surfaced today. "He is capable of performing better and scoring 50 out of 50 is something we are used to with him. But today I guess he succumbed to pressure, perhaps the thought of losing his first big title at home did affect him,'' said Ashok. "It feels good to get back the title which I last won in 1991,'' added Ashok. In the other events, Satgurdass caught the cameras while claiming gold and setting a new National record in the 50m rifle prone event. He fired 698 while eclipsing the previous record set by A.P. Subbaiah at 697 in 1999 at Auckland. Incidentally, Subbaiah claimed silver with 693 while Ram Kumar settled for bronze at 691.9. "He is an International medal prospect for us and if we have technological advances like computerised shooting practise, he will better his scores,'' said coach Felix Thomas. Satgurdass, who missed bronze in the Asian Games, was mobbed by his Navy team-mates and while sporting an endless smile, said, "this perhaps is my best performance on par with what I did at the Commonwealth. I am extremely happy to get my first individual gold at the National level. I am aiming to qualify for the Athens Olympics and hopefully next year I will get the required scores.''
