Self-belief takes Siddharth through

MUMBAI NOV. 14. Siddharth Sumantray, confident in the belief that mother knows best, hung on when everything seemed lost to script an upset semifinal victory over M. Parthiban in the boys under-17 event of the Rs. 2.25 lakh Complan junior squash Open 2002 on Thursday.

The unseeded Mumbai youngster, guided by mother-cum-coach in the stands, won a tense match 4-9, 9-2, 9-5, 2-9, 10-8 after battling on court for 60 minutes against the second seed from Chennai. Siddharth will take on top seed Saurav Ghoshal in the title clash.

Finalists were spotted in seven age groups, four in the boys and three in the girls events.

Mumbai's Shivangi Paranjape appeared to the most impressive of the winners, overcoming the challenge of the talented Chennai girl Deepika Pallikal in the girls under-13 category.

The results (semifinals):

Boys under-11: 2-Ravi Dikshit (Delhi) bt 3-Aditya Zaveri (Mumbai) 9-1, 9-0, 9-0; 1-Romit Tandon (Kolkata) bt 4-Aditya Jagtap (Mumbai) 9-4, 6-9, 9-3, 9-0.

Boys under-13: 1-Vikram Malhotra (Mumbai) bt 4-Anup Sharma (Jindal) 9-0, 9-1, 9-1; 2-Laxman Joshi (Jindal) bt Prashanth Kumar (Chennai) 9-5, 9-2, 5-7, 10-8.

Boys under-15: 1-Sandeep Jangra (Jindal) bt 4-Naishad Balwani (Mumbai) 9-2, 9-4, 9-5; 3-Naresh Kumar (Delhi) bt 2-Manek Mathur (Mumbai) 9-7, 9-2, 7-9, 9-1.

Boys under-17: 1-Saurav Ghosal (Kolkata) bt 4-Sarvesh Chouhan (Jindal) 9-1, 9-0, 9-2; Siddharth Samantray (Mumbai) bt 2-M. Parthiban (Chennai) 4-9, 9-2, 9-5, 2-9, 10-8.

Girls under-13: 4-Shivangi Paranjape (Mumbai) bt 1-Deepika Pallikal (Chennai) 9-5, 5-9, 10-8, 9-7; 3-Surabhi Mishra (Rajasthan) bt 2-Nikita Emmanuel (Mumbai) 7-9, 9-7, 10-8, 10-8.

Girls under-15: 1-Alisha Mashruwala (Mumbai) bt 4-Shivani Philip (Chennai) 9-0, 9-0, 9-0; 2-Shruti Reddy (Chennai) bt Madhura Paranjape (Mumbai) 9-1, 9-4, 9-0.

Girls under-17: 1-Joshna Chinappa (Chennai) bt Niyati Diwan (Mumbai) 9-0, 9-0, 9-2; 2-Sonali Philip (Chennai) bt Natasha Lal (Mumbai) 7-9, 9-3, 9-5, 9-5.
