Doctor, 12 hospital employees suspended

SALEM Nov. 14. Following the death of two patients on consecutive days, 13 employees, including two doctors, of the Salem Government Mohan Kumarmangalam Medical College Hospital, have been placed under suspension, pending enquiry.

The orders were issued by the Dean, M.Ganapathy on the direction of the Director of Medical Education, conveyed over telephone. The Dean told The Hindu that the action was taken on the basis of oral complaints and media reports.

Solaiammal, who eight months pregnant, and four-year-old Prema, died allegedly owing for lack of medical attention. While Solaiammal was admitted as an inpatient, Prema was treated as an outpatient.

Sridevi, Assistant Professor; D.Tamilarasi, K.Rajeswar and Gomathi Raja, nurses; Sampoornam and Mangayarkarasi, nursing Assistants, and P.Palaniammal and K.Palaniammal, sanitary workers; were suspended in the Soalaimmal case, and R.Selvaraj, Assistant Professor, Sasikumar, house surgeon, Sivabakkiam and R.Meenakshi, nurses, and A.Vijayarani, nursing assistant, in the Prema case.

Meanwhile, a three-member team comprising Anil Kumar, Deputy Director of Medical Education; Arunachalam, Deputy Director (Administration), and Ramkumar Raghupathy, Dean In-charge, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, visited the hospital and interrogated the employees for hours and the kin of the deceased. The team is expected to submit its report to the Government tomorrow.

Doctors flay suspension

The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association, which convened an emergency meeting on the hospital premises, condemned the suspension without enquiry.

The State association president, Prakasam, said that the members of a particular department were placed under suspension and this created insecurity in the medical fraternity.

Since government doctors were at a meeting till noon, outpatients waited for hours before they were attended on. Many were infuriated when they were told to come the next day.

Six employees sacked

Our Tuticorin Staff Reporter reports:

In another case, a doctor and six others of the Ottapidaram Government Hospital were placed under suspension yesterday for absence during duty hours.

The orders, issued by the Joint Director of Health Services, Tuticorin, came after a surprise check by the Ottapidaram MLA, Sivaperumal.

Those suspended were Thanu Subramaniam, doctor; Selvarani, nurse; Raju, pharmacist; Kumar, driver; Biju Kumar, assistant; Jayakar, nursing assistant, and Vijayalakshmi, maternity assistant, sources said.
