Villagers warn of road blockade in Jhajjar

By Rajesh Ahuja

CHANDIGARH NOV. 14. Tension ran high for the second day today in Surah and Dulina villages of Jhajjar district over the arrest of five persons by the police on Wednesday in connection with the lynching of five Dalits in Dulina on Dussehra day.

Blockade of roads continued today despite a strong police presence and prohibitory orders. Even as the police arrested five more persons belonging to several villages on charges of arson, looting, and assault on Government employees yesterday, a "Mahapanchayat'' of the angry villagers issued a categorical warning that all roads leading to Jhajjar would be blocked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Friday to exert pressure on the police to the release of the arrested persons.

According to reports reaching the State headquarters, the Mahapanchayat had also decided that in case the Haryana Government did not release the arrested persons, a call would be given for observance of a `Haryana Bandh'. Reports indicate that a large number of villagers was still on the roads.

Meanwhile, a Haryana police spokesman said here this evening the duty Magistrate had sent the arrested persons to judicial custody. He confirmed that the prohibitory orders were in force in the Jhajjar district and the situation was tense but under control. Adequate security arrangements had been made to maintain law and order.

He also said four police personnel were injured near Surah due to stone throwing. The Bahadurgarh, station House officer, Satbir Singh, was seriously injured and admitted to the PGIMS, Rohtak.

The Director-General of Police, M.S.Malik, visited the injured officer.

He said Mr. Malik had held a meeting with senior police and civil officers at Rohtak and Bahadurgarh to take stock of the situation and directed them to take strict action against the rumour-mongers and law-breakers.
