20 per cent rebate on dress material

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Nov. 14. The Minister for Sericulture and Textiles, H.M.Revanna, has said that the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, has agreed in principle on a 20 per cent rebate for clearing the old stocks of dress material with cooperative institutions.

Speaking to presspersons after receiving a memorandum from a delegation of silk weavers, twisters, reelers, and farmers in his chambers here on Wednesday, the minister said that the State Government would approach the Centre for sharing half the rebate.

Mr. Revanna said that the sericulture and textiles sectors were facing a severe crisis due to fierce competition in the international market. The situation was precarious for the silk industry due to the dumping of Chinese silk in the country. He said that cooperative institutions had a stock worth Rs. 21 crore. He said the Government had decided to give a subsidy of Rs. 2.5 crore to reelers in 1994 to help them make a one-time settlement of the penal interest. But he ruled out announcing any minimum support price. On cocoons, he said the Government had decided to pay Rs. 10 per kg as part of its effort to encourage sericulturists. Already, Rs. 95 lakh had been paid to them in Kolar, and a meeting had been convened at Ramanagaram for disbursing the money. To face competition in the textiles sector, an apparel park would be established in a 181-acre plot at Doddaballapur, and the Government had released Rs. 32 crore for developing it.

He said the powerloom owners were paying more on power compared to those in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, and he had requested the Chief Minister to provide some relief to them.

Mr. Revanna said that he had been discussing the problems faced by those involved in sericulture and textiles sector, with the Chief Minister for finding a lasting solution, keeping in mind the competition in the international market.
