By Our Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL NOV. 14 . Five persons were killed and 18 injured when a TSTC bus rammed a stationary logs-laden lorry on Dindigul-Palani main road at Muthanampatti near Dindigul here in the wee hours today.

While the bus conductor, Ravichandran (35) of Azhagarsingampatti, Vellaisamy (46) of Therkur and Palanichamy (44) of Kottampatti died on the spot, Thimmar (65) of Avarampatti and the bus driver, Murugan (43) of Dindigul town, succumbed to their injuries in the Government General Hospital here.

Residents of Muthanampatti rescued the injured trapped in the mangled remains of the Pollachi-Dindigul bus.

However, there was no damage to the lorry, which was just pushed about 20 feet away.

The police and the public struggled for two hours to remove the bodies, which were later sent for postmortem. Traffic was restored after two and half hours.

The injured, including four women and two children, were admitted to the hospital.

Talking to mediapersons, the Rural DSP, C. Arunachalam, and the Town DSP, P.K. Kaliamurthy, blamed the accident on negligence on the part of Murugan, who, they said, drove the bus at great speed.

The passengers told the police that the driver had cautioned them to duck their heads as the bus was approaching a ``long tree'' on the roadside.

More over, there was no red light or reflectors on the rear-end of the lorry or on the pile of protruding logs.

The Transport Minister, R. Viswanathan, along with the District Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, visited the hospital and supervised the treatment being given to the injured.
