Police assurance to Uphaar victims

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 14. The Delhi police today said they would return the cheque which their Special Cell had accepted as an honour for killing two alleged terrorists in an "encounter'' at Ansal Plaza shopping mall here recently if it was found to have been issued by Sushil Ansal or any of his companies.

Delhi's Police Commissioner, R.S. Gupta, gave this assurance to Neelam Krishnamurthy, convener of the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy, whom he had called to express his sorrow about what had happened with her when she had visited Police Headquarters on November 11 to express her protest over the acceptance of the cheque by the city police.

According to media reports, the function had been organised by Sushil Ansal to honour the Special Cell's team, including ACP Rajbir Singh, who had led the encounter. When Ms. Krishnamurthy saw photographs in newspapers the next day showing the Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Neeraj Kumar, accepting the cheque for Rs. 1 lakh from Ansal, Ms. Krishnamurthy went to Police Headquarters to lodge her protest.

In her protest, Ms. Krishnamurthy said that the police, particularly Neeraj Kumar, should not have accepted the reward from Ansal as the latter is an accused in the Uphaar fire tragedy case while the police officer was at one time connected with the investigation into the case in the capacity of a DIG in the Central Bureau of Investigation.

After her meeting with the Commissioner, Ms. Krishnamurthy said Gupta had told her that the police had the impression that the function had been organised by the market association of Ansal Plaza and that the cheque was also issued by it.

She said the Commissioner assured her that he would have it probed as to who had issued the cheque, and if it was found to have been issued by Sushil Ansal or any of his companies, the police would return it to him.
