`CM diverting attention from Cauvery issue'

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM NOV.14. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, is diverting the attention of the people from the Cauvery row to the border issue, the President of the BJP district unit, Suresh Angadi, has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Angadi charged that the decision taken by the Maharashtra Government to move the Supreme Court on the border row was an "idea" facilitated by Mr. Krishna to his Maharashtra counterpart, Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Recalling how Mr. Krishna helped Mr. Deshmukh during his hour of crisis a few months ago, he said Mr. Deshmukh was only repaying the favour by raking up the border issue only to bail out Mr. Krishna from the Cauvery row.

Mr. Angadi said both the Chief Ministers should accept the decision of the Prime Minister on the border dispute. He said the recommendation of Mahajan Commission was final in this matter.

Referring to the recent statements of the Major and Medium Irrigation Minister, H.K. Patil, that he could provide water to the people of Nargund and Navalgund if the Union Government cleared the Mahadayi Project and that he would file an application in that regard soon, Mr. Angadi said the farmers had been facing a tough time for the past six months due to the drought conditions there.

He said the Government was silent on the proposal for the construction of Asoga Dam in Khanapur taluk. Seeking a "White Paper" on irrigation works taken up in Belgaum District, he alleged that the State Government had no vision about irrigation and indulged in blaming the Union Government for all its failures.

He also sought to point out that the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, and the former Union Agriculture Minister, Babagouda Patil, were misleading farmers on various issues. They failed to improve the lot of farmers when they were in power, he said.
