By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE NOV. 14 . There is ample opportunity for the development of old port area here and it must be utilised by the concerned, the District in-charge Minister, B. Ramanath Rai, has said. He was laying the foundation stone for the building of an ice plant and cooling unit project, taken up by the Mangalore Minorities Mechanised Fishermen Consumer Co-operative Society, on Wednesday.

Urging those concerned not to neglect its development, Mr. Rai recalled the days when he was the Minister for Ports and Fisheries and development works taken up in the old port region. Noting that the old port sported a new look, he said the roads here had been concretised and steps taken to preserve sanitation in the area.

He said the execution of the port related development work had been made easier by starting a sub-division of the Department of Ports in Mangalore. Mr. Rai urged the people to cooperate in the endeavour of the department and the local administration to maintain cleanliness in the area and promised all possible assistance for the all round development of the region.

The former Mangalore Mayor, Abdul Khader, the corporators, Sarala Karkera and Farooq, the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Vishwanath, and the engineer, Udaykumar, were chief guests. The Joint-Secretary of Seafood Buyers' Association, M.H. Hussain, welcomed the gathering. The Joint-Secretary of the society, Mohammed Ali, proposed vote of thanks.
