NEW DELHI NOV. 14. Two former Prime Ministers, H.D. Deve Gowda and V.P. Singh, and leaders of Left parties today joined hands to take out a peace march in the Capital demanding that the United States keep its "hands off Iraq" and not launch a war on that country.

Expressing solidarity with Iraq, the leaders criticised the Vajpayee Government for not taking a firm stand in view of the strident postures by the Bush administration over Iraq.

Assembling under the banner of `Committee against war on Iraq', the leaders said that for the U.S., any excuse was good enough to carry forward its plan to attack Iraq. The CPI general secretary, A.B. Bardhan, warned that with Washington declaring its real intention of a change of regime in Iraq, the threat of war indicated Washington's style in its drive for oil and world hegemony.

Addressing the protesters at Jantar Mantar, the leaders said the embargo against Iraq, in existence for over a decade, had already resulted in the death of several thousand innocent children due to shortage of life-saving medicine and other essential commodities.

The leaders recalled that despite demonstrations all over the world against war, the U.S. appeared determined to go ahead with it plan for a regime change. The leaders promised to hold more demonstrations elsewhere in the country in support of their demand.

Among those who took part in the march and addressed the protesters were, the CPI(M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, his CPI counterpart, A.B. Bardhan, the CPI(M) politburo member, Prakash Karat, the CPI national secretaries D. Raja and Atul Anjaan, Manoj Bhattacharya (RSP), the CPI-ML (L) general secretary, Dipankar Bhattacharya, the Janata Dal (Secular) general secretary, Danish Ali and G. Devarajan (AIFB).
