HC restrains Vaigai Thread Processors

By Our Staff Reporter

Kochi Nov 14. The Kerala High Court on Thursday restrained the Vaigai Thread Processors Ltd, Koratty from cutting and removing valuable trees in the 90 acres of the land taken on lease from the Government.

Justice M. Ramachandran issued the interim order on a writ petition filed by the Koratty Gram Panchyat Pourasamithy seeking a direction to the State Government to cancel the lease given to it. According to the petitioner, the land was earlier leased to Jamuna Mills. And the Vaigai Thread Processors was now in possession of the land, which had many valuable trees like teak wood, sandalwood etc.

The petitioner contended that only land had been given to the company and the tree belonged to the State Government. In fact, the company had already cut and removed the trees worth Rs 2 crores. Though representations had been filed before the Additional Land Revenue Commissioner, no action had been taken against the company. Since sandalwood and other valuable trees had been removed, the company had committed an offence under the forestland.

Besides seeking a direction to the State Government to recover the loss caused to the State Government, the petitioner also pleaded for initiating prosecution proceedings against the company officials for cutting and removing valuable trees.
