Project to take IT to rural schools

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Nov. 14. Yet another step was taken today as part of the State Government's ambitious plans to take IT to the common man's doorstep. The Government activated a joint initiative of "Community Learning Centres" with the Azim Premji Foundation (APF) to provide computer-assisted education in rural government schools. The project was inaugurated by B.K. Chandrashekar, Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education.

A group of young children are ready to start learning on the computers at the Government Higher Primary School at Hebbagodi, Anekal taluk. This Community Learning Centre is the first in a series of centres that will be launched across the State. Over 55 new centres have been planned in 11 districts of the State. These would be launched this month.

The foundation has already launched 34 Community Learning Centres in a pilot phase in Kolar, Mandya, and Bangalore Rural districts between April and June last year.

According to Dileep Ranjrekar, CEO, APF, the Community Learning Centres are part of Wipro's drive to catalyse the process of universalisation of elementary education in India.
