Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Editorial `Dark childhood' (Nov. 8) has highlighted the travails of child labour. It is a stark reality that, in spite of the laws, employing children below the age of 14 in hazardous jobs is still in vogue. But neither the decision to boycott the products made out of child labour nor the arrest of the employers would bring about a complete termination of this social evil. Such steps would only force the children to seek new jobs or even resort to stealth for keeping their body and soul together. The prime concern of the authorities should be to eradicate poverty. Only a dire financial crisis compels the parents to send their children to these perilous tasks. The Government should take credible measures to provide these parents with livelihood.
