Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jagmohan, has said that the takeover the Arunachaleswarar temple of Tiruvannamalai by the Archaeological Survey of India would enable the Central Government to pump in funds for its repair and conservation. The takeover would prevent the temple and its precincts from being ravaged and commercialised further. Let the ASI make the temple similar to the Brahadeeshwarar temple of Thanjavur. S. Kuppuswamy, Bangalore Sir, The move of the ASI to take over the temple of Tiruvannamalai is wounding the religious sentiments of devotees of Lord Arunachaleswarar. The empty promises being offered by the ASI Superintendent to the effect that the takeover would not interfere with the daily poojas and other rites have no substance because devotees know what happens at the Big Temple of Thanjavur. The ASI had put up several obstacles during kumbabhishekams in 1980 and 1997 at the Thanjavur temple. Ramya Ragavan, Salem
