``Contrary to the popular perception, terrorist activity around the world, which India and other countries were at present fighting, was not the work of ignorant and hungry people, but the result of absence of proper education and lack of a liberal and non-parochial outlook,'' Mr. Advani said delivering the 72nd convocation address at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (formerly Agra) University. Talking to reporters, Mr. Advani hailed the security forces for preventing ``terrible catastrophes'' thrice during the last one year and asked the nation to understand their ``difficulties'' in the fight against terrorism. ``For the last two decades, a war is going on. India is fighting cross-border terrorism,'' he said. ``In this fight, the security forces are playing an exemplary role,'' he said, adding the whole nation should understand their difficulties as they are taking risks and playing with their lives to confront terrorists. Referring to the terrorist attacks on the Parliament complex, Akshardham temple and the recent Ansal Plaza incident, he said ``had the security forces not displayed courage, there could have been terrible catastrophes.''
