Protest in church against anti-conversion law

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM Nov. 10 . Members of the minority communities observed a day's ``silent fast'' in front of the St.Susaiappar Church at Sanyasigundu near here today, calling upon the State Government to withdraw the anti-conversion bill.

According to the priest, Gregoryrajan, who led the protest, the fast was undertaken by members, including women, of the Christian and Muslim communities, as part of the continuing protest against the ``draconian bill''.

The legislation would harass those who were serving, particularly Christians, the oppressed and suppressed sections. It was wrong to assume that educational institutions, hospitals and social service centres run by the missionaries were intended to convert people, he said.

On the contrary, they were set up with the motto of inculcating discipline and humanitarian concern among the people.
